Blackcurrant sage is one variety of Salvia microphylla. There are many types of hybrids for the Salvia microphylla variety, ranging in color and color patterns on the flowers. Salvia microphylla provides nectar for hummingbirds, also this shrub could provide hummingbirds a safe space to nest or rest during torpor. Torpor is the hibernation period hummingbirds enter between feedings or during cold weather. When the hummingbird goes into torpor, the bird’s feet lock around a branch and the hummingbird hangs upside down until it awakes.
